Deputy Ward Manager


An opportunity to join our management team at Dorothy Pattison Hospital has arisen for a Deputy Ward Manager. This role will be based within the hospital to work as part of the management team on Ambleside Ward. Ambleside is an acute fast paced female admission ward.

We are looking to appoint a well-motivated experienced enthusiastic RMN who is able to efficiently meet demand of Job description and support the recovery focus on the ward. You will be expected to have good and supportive working relationships with not only your ward team but wider MDT and external agencies.

The Deputy Ward Manager role involves (but is not limited to):

  • Deputising for the Ward Manager when required
  • Having an assertive and unrelenting focus on the performance of the nursing team and taking definitive action when performance falls below an acceptable level
  • Supporting the Ward Manager in ensuring the ward achieves excellence across the full range of relevant quality and compliance criteria
  • Effectively working with other members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) and Senior Management Team (SMT) to ensure effective care in delivery to patients and all members of staff are appropriately managed
  • Promoting and maintaining a professional nursing environment, ensuring a high standard of nursing care at all times, assisting with evaluation through clinical governance and audit
  • Assisting the ward managers in coordinating the work of the nursing team including staff training, duty rotas and making adjustments to manage short term cover to manage emergencies and unexpected events
  • Supporting the Ward Manager in the planning and implementation of service developments by developing a highly skilled and motivated nursing workforce through regular supervision, appraisals and probationary meetings
  • Supporting and often leading regular patient feedback mechanisms, e.g. satisfaction surveys, community meetings as well as coordinating complaints and incident investigations and management cases

To be successful Deputy Ward Manager, with us you’ll need:

  • First level nursing degree/diploma
  • Full registration as an RMN
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience within a mental health setting, including experience in the supervision of junior staff
